Completed program February 2016
What brought me to PowerUP?
I had just gone in for a routine checkup, and I was shocked by my cholesterol levels. I just hit a big milestone in my life, turning 60, and this was a wake-up call. I was concerned with where my health was headed, and what the next 20 years of life were going to look like. I asked myself, “Mary, who do you want to be? A frumpy old lady stuck on medications? Or someone who’s active and enjoying retirement?” I realized it was time to bring everything under my own control. I want to be able to live life on my own terms for as long as possible, not held down by my health at an early age!
The PowerUP Experience
I'd been on plenty of “diets” before, but never in a program like this that focuses on making bigger life change and provides the structure and accountability for women to succeed. One of the most powerful changes I’ve made comes from holding myself accountable to the nutrition plan. The idea of eating healthy foods and lean proteins six times each day sounded tough at first. But it’s been life changing! It took some practice to get it down, but soon it was second nature, and my perspective on food completely changed.
I went from being hungry and snacking all the time, to feeling full and energized throughout the day. I was never waiting for the next meal with baited breath, starving myself until I could eat again. And having those “Recharge meals” as part of the program did away with the whole idea of “cheating” and feeling “guilty” about eating that piece of cake. I can eat what I want, and I’m confident I can choose to be healthy. That’s the empowering part!
I feel stronger physically, I’ve lost the weight I wanted to lose, and I’ve got more energy than I’ve had in a long time. Which is everything I could’ve asked for! But the biggest change I’ve made isn’t physical. I truly feel in control of my life. I’m the one who can influence my health, and I can shape my future in any way I want. The worries around being sluggish and looking frumpy are gone. It’s amazing how all the parts of PowerUP – the nutrition, the accountability, the focus on positive mindset - feed off each other to create this empowering experience.
A word to other women
I think you have to go into PowerUP with the kind of attitude where you’re willing to change and make changes. For me, I knew where my health was heading, and I knew how important it was for my me to reach my goals. It feels empowering when you accomplish what you set out to do and you get the job done.
